Nighthawks

I'm the most active at night. Ask anyone - I'll bite your head off when you ask me what I want for breakfast (if and when I wake up before 10am), but I also come alive at 9pm and don't start to fade until 2...3...4...

Unfortunately, the world is made for people who want to get most of their work done in the daylight - sensibly so - and I find myself doing my laundry at 2am or writing a paper at 4:30...Somy and the crickets. I just got back in from taking out the trash and almost had a heart-attack when I stepped out of the trashroom onto the sidewalk and noticed a man about 20 feet away, quickly approaching me. Luckily, my front door was within steps of where I was standing, but it occurred to me that 2am, alone on a dark city sidewalk in a short (not mini!) skirt (thank God it's finally nice outside) is a recipe for disaster. At the very least, I'd feel like a serious idiot as I recounted being mugged the next day.

I get a lot of satisfaction out of getting everything done in the morning, so I'm not sure why I wait until the night to start working. I think it's partially because I always want to be outside in the daylight, enjoying the sun and the company of happy people...but also, I think it's because the day only ends for me when the sun comes up, and I only commit to work when I have some kind of pressure on my back. In any case, the point is that I love not being productive at all during the day, find myself being most productive at night, and then kick myself come 2:00am when I've still got tons of things to get done and decide to upload pictures onto Facebook instead. Chronic procrastination...a disorder, or just laziness? I'll probably look into it later...when I'm trying to avoid doing something else.
